PROPERTY HISTORY

Way back in 1854 the houses at 6 to 12 Coronation Street made their first appearance on a map of Geelong. The place in which they stood was at the time known as Little Scotland, a small area defined by Aberdeen, Pakington Street, La Trobe Terrace and probably what is now Autumn Street. It was described by The Geelong Advertiser in 1847 as ‘one of the prettiest and most thriving villages in Her Majesty’s territory of N.S.W’ with Victoria as a state yet to come into being. An 1851 census reveals that Little Scotland was home to mostly artisans, ministers, teachers and people in commercial occupations but not many Scots! So it remains an unanswered question as to why it procured this name.

Geelong was coming into its own at this time and these houses benefited from the gathering prosperity and confidence of a certain future for the town. Beginning as single story cottages they were constructed from Barrabool Hills stone. The second story and iron fretwork was added in the 1870’s to form the terrace style homes we see today, built with bricks from one of the local brickfields, which was a burgeoning industry at the time. The vast majority of houses in the area were composed of wooden planks which made the stone and brick construction relatively rare and played a large part in it standing the test of time. All four townhouses had an extension added in the 1980’s which in the case of number 12 is now the light-filled kitchen. The present bathroom was originally a standalone construction that housed the kitchen or ‘outhouse’, with a substantial cooking range connected to one of the two brick chimneys. Originally the plot of land ran all the way through to Emerald Street.

For the football devotees it was just a stone’s throw from here that the Geelong Football Club came into being. 1859 saw the first games played on the Argyle oval directly across the road, a bird’s-eye view of which would have been granted from the same front windows you look through today. Imagine the excitement in Little Scotland when this brand new game first appeared on Coronation Street. I wonder if they knew how inextricably interwoven the game would become into the very heart of Geelong’s identity.

It is a remarkable thing that not only has this building survived for the last 170 years but it has thrived. It has travelled through time with many and varied occupants even as an Inne at one stage, The Price Arthur. Adjustments for modern living have been made here and there, but its unique character has been retained, surviving thanks to the great skills and materials that were used in the construction and the care that has been granted by its owners. When you step in and out of the house, you know you are treading on the same block of stone as an interminable number of people before you, the boots of many and varied styles and fashions having ever so gradually made their imprint on the rock solid step. The view out the door may have changed but the building remains the same, evidence that although many things change some gems find a way to stay.
