It feels like Groundhog Day. Here we are waiting to see if we will we see a Melbourne Cup rate rise next week? The media says "yes", the bank economists say "yes", the market is split 50/50.

This is one decision I am less certain on. For housing, a rate rise would be a negative as it will impact buyer sentiment and I believe it will prolong the rental crisis. It will also do almost nothing to fuel and electricity prices. Construction costs are already starting to moderate, as has spending on holiday travel. At the same time, unemployment remains extremely low and the economy is not cooling down as quickly as hoped. Should the RBA have been more aggressive at the beginning of the rate rising cycle? Possibly.

Most recent economic forecasts from the Australian Construction Industry Forum (ACIF) suggest we are likely in for another rate rise but the timing of this is uncertain. As hard as it is we do need to bring inflation under control.
