There’s a welcome dose of good news for mortgage holders this month, with inflation figures moving in the right direction and putting rate relief firmly on the table. The latest data shows Australia’s trimmed mean inflation has dropped to 2.7% over the past year—comfortably within the Reserve Bank’s target range of 2–3% for the second quarter in a row.

While it’s still slightly above the RBA’s forecast of 2.6%, economists say it’s unlikely to derail plans for a rate cut, with many tipping it could come as early as August. In fact, three of the four major banks are predicting the current inflation trend is enough to justify easing the official cash rate.

For homeowners and buyers alike, this could be a turning point. Lower interest rates would bring relief to borrowers and may spark a fresh wave of buyer activity, especially in the more affordable segments of the market. Investors, too, may benefit from improved lending conditions and renewed confidence.

The Reserve Bank’s next meeting is set for August 11–12, and all eyes will be on whether they decide to make a move. If inflation continues to track as expected, this could be the moment Australia begins to pivot out of the high-rate environment we’ve been navigating.
